CAtCHO Man
group projects

A gang of nasty rats has taken over New Yarn City! It's up to CATCHO MAN to kick their butts and scratch their crooked snouts away.

Game project

This game was created during the first half of my last year at DAE at Howest.

We set out to create a game from scratch with a group of six people, each belonging to one of the four major courses: IGP, GGP, GD, and ANI.

Our game was Catcho Man, a game where you play as Catcho Man, a vigilante hero who uses his skills in the ring to take out the thugs in his city and bring justice to evildoers.

Gameplay

Catcho Man is a brawler/platformer where the goal is to utilize your mobility to your advantage when facing your opponents. Use the environment, along with your combat moves, to get around and earn style points. When you get enough, enter showdown mode and round up all the remaining enemies.

Game design

My work on the project was primarily focused on creating and updating the Game Design Document so both the artists and programmers could understand what needed to be done.

This was mostly done during the first half of production, as we needed to nail down the game design so we could all focus on making the game instead of going over it.

We used HacknPlan for our GDD and project task management.

VFX

The VFX on the main character, such as attack effects and movement effects, were created by me. We wanted to recreate the feeling of a comic book hero, so we set out to make the comic punch effect that one would see in comic books.

While my coursework is mostly in Unity, this project was made in Unreal, making it harder to figure out how to approach this challenge. In the end, we built the comic punch effect feature, and we ended up with a VFX system that works for what we wanted.

Below, you can see some of the effects I made for the project.

Final Results

The final version of the game is something I can be proud of, while in the beginning we wanted to add more things such as bosses, a much higher level, and multiple different fighting styles for the player to choose from. What we made is a start for those ideas, and we decided to improve the base of the game to make it feel like the best version it could be.

You can check out our game at itch.io to playtest the game itself
